The war in eastern Ukraine has intensified its focus on infrastructure serving civilians, as confirmed by recent strikes in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. On Sunday, Russian forces targeted a school in the settlement of Komyshuvakha that served as a weekly distribution point for humanitarian aid.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the settlement was hit multiple times with aerial bombs starting in the morning. He noted that the initial strike was followed by a repeat attack involving nine additional bombs, which struck the shelter where residents were taking cover. Zelenskyy emphasized that Russian forces likely knew the school distributed aid to local residents remaining in the area.
Mykhailo Semikin, head of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration, reported that Russian forces struck the center of the village with at least nine FAB-3000 guided aerial bombs. Initial reports from Semikin indicated that 18 people were killed, including a police officer and two State Emergency Service personnel, with five others injured. He added that 27 people remained missing at the time of his update.
Subsequent reports from Ukraine's State Emergency Service raised the confirmed death toll to 24. This final count includes two emergency workers and four police officers. The service also confirmed that five people were injured, among them two first responders. Rescue and search operations continue at the site to locate the missing individuals.
Zelenskyy described the attack as evidence that Russia seeks no de-escalation. He referenced a previous humanitarian operation in Oleshky, suggesting a moment of potential progress had been missed. The president called for a strong response from the international community and continued support for Ukraine to protect lives.
The strike occurred during a period when local residents in Komyshuvakha relied on the school for essential supplies. The use of heavy guided aerial bombs against a civilian shelter has drawn attention to the targeting of humanitarian logistics in the region.
