The death toll from a Russian airstrike on an aid distribution site in Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia region has reached 50, Ukrainian emergency authorities said on Friday, November 6. Search operations were continuing at the site of Monday’s attack, which struck the frontline village of Komyshuvakha as civilians gathered to receive assistance.

Ukraine’s state emergency services said rescuers had recovered another eight bodies from beneath the rubble, bringing the reported number of dead to 50. The latest recoveries came four days after the November 2 bombing, with teams still searching the damaged site. The toll makes the attack one of the deadliest strikes on civilians this year.

In a message posted on Telegram on Friday, Mykhailo Semikin said search and rescue operations in Komyshuvakha were in their fifth day. His update and the emergency services’ announcement described an ongoing effort at the site, where the recovery of additional bodies had pushed the number of confirmed deaths higher.

According to Kyiv, Russian forces struck a former school building that was being used for weekly distributions of humanitarian aid. Civilians had assembled there for the handout when the attack took place. The building’s use as an aid distribution point placed people seeking assistance at the location of the strike.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the Russian attack hit an underground shelter while people were inside. His account adds to Kyiv’s description of a strike on a location where civilians had gathered. The emergency services’ latest announcement gave the total number killed as 50 while reporting that searches remained under way.

The United Nations human rights mission in Ukraine condemned the attack earlier this week. It said the strike likely breached international law, adding its criticism to the Ukrainian accounts of the bombing and its civilian toll.

The attack followed the end of the longest ceasefire between the two sides in the southern Kherson region. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has now lasted more than four and a half years, killing hundreds of thousands of people and forcing millions from their homes.

The rising death toll comes ahead of a planned resumption of diplomatic discussions. Talks between Ukraine and Russia, mediated by the United States, are due to restart in Abu Dhabi next week.
