Mbappe's Ballon d'Or Bid: Record-Setting Goals Face Trophy-Less Season
The Real Madrid striker aims to break a decade-long trend of trophy-winning winners by citing his 22 World Cup goals and top-scoring feats in Europe.

Kylian Mbappe enters Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London as a dark horse, betting his case on individual statistics rather than team silverware. The 2025-26 season concluded without a single trophy for the French forward, a rare occurrence for the award's recent recipients. He is not the bookmakers' favorite, but he holds the record for the most goals in World Cup history.
Mbappe's primary evidence is his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. He finished as the tournament's top scorer with 22 goals in 22 matches, surpassing Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe also won the Golden Boot, marking his second consecutive tournament with that distinction. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history.. is something that really stands out," Mbappe said last month. When asked who he would vote for, he replied, "Myself."
His club performance reinforced his statistical case. In La Liga, Mbappe scored 25 goals to finish as the competition's top scorer. In the Champions League, he netted 15 goals, also leading the scoring charts. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions," he noted. "I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it."
The central weakness of his bid is the absence of team success. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. Their manager changed from Xabi Alonso to Alvaro Arbeloa during the campaign. Internationally, France placed fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.
His main rivals have stronger trophy records. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane collected three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. The contrast is sharp: Yamal and Kane hold silverware from the same period Mbappe used to accumulate individual records.
Mbappe remains confident, arguing that individual brilliance dictates the outcome. "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told RFI radio. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho also supported the bid. "We know who has made history this summer," Mourinho said, noting that the player in question is not from PSG or the Spanish national team.
Historical precedent favors trophy winners. For the past ten years, every Ballon d'Or recipient had won at least one major trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won in 2025 after helping PSG win their first Champions League title. Rodri won in 2024 after Euro 2024 and the Premier League with Manchester City.
The last player to win the award without a major team trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013. Ronaldo ended Messi's four-year streak while scoring 66 goals for club and country, even as Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Mbappe has been nominated nine times and finished third in 2023. The ceremony will determine if his record-breaking 2026 campaign is enough to break the modern trend.
