Soccer’s most prestigious individual award will be handed out at the London Palladium within 24 hours. The 2026 Ballon d'Or race has narrowed to three candidates: Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane. The outcome will depend on how voters weigh statistical output against major team trophies.

Forecasting models disagree on the likely winner. Avisia, a French data analysis firm, projects a 23 percent probability for Yamal, the 19-year-old Barcelona winger. Kane follows at 21 percent, with Mbappe and the 2024 winner Rodri tied at 19 percent. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five at 18 percent. In contrast, bookmakers list Kane as the heavy favorite, assigning him roughly a 70 percent chance of victory.

The candidates have mixed public campaigns. Yamal and Mbappe have both openly supported their own cases. Kane has remained quieter. Former players offer varied opinions. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone argues that Messi, who recently retired from international football, deserves the award for his performance at age 38. Jude Bellingham supports Kane, citing his work ethic, while Anthony Gordon backs Yamal. Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni champions Mbappe.

Individual statistics favor Mbappe and Kane. Mbappe led La Liga with 25 goals and topped the Champions League scoring chart with 15. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot and set a record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by a player since Messi recorded 82 in 2011-12.

Team success complicates the picture for both strikers. Mbappe did not win any major trophies with club or country. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third at the World Cup with England. Yamal claims the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, despite injury issues affecting his personal numbers. Historical data supports trophy-heavy seasons, as only four of the last 19 winners failed to capture a major continental or global title.

If Yamal wins, he will become the youngest recipient in the award's history. The current record is held by Brazil's Ronaldo, who was 21 when he received the honor in 1997.
