Villa Stun City in League Upset

The narrative of an untouchable Manchester City season hit a sudden wall on Saturday. In a tense encounter at Villa Park, Aston Villa emerged as the victors with a 2-1 win, ending the visitors' flawless run in the Premier League. The result was fueled by a dominant performance from Nicolas Jackson, who scored both goals for Unai Emery’s restructured squad.
Enzo Maresca had just secured a historic mark by becoming the first manager to win his first seven top-flight matches with a new club. Yet, that momentum stalled against a resilient Villa side. This defeat is particularly notable given that City have now lost at this venue in four consecutive seasons, suggesting a persistent struggle to overcome Emery’s tactical setup.
The hosts struck early, finding the net just six minutes into the game. A heavy touch from Marc Guehi set up Jackson, who cut inside Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma. For much of the first half, City controlled possession, but Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki stood as a wall. He denied efforts from Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov, while Ndiaye also struck the post.
City finally broke through in the 52nd minute. Erling Haaland powered in a header from Ndiaye's cross, bringing his tally to 13 goals in just 10 appearances this season. Moments later, Josko Gvardiol had a chance to take the lead, but his fierce drive was turned onto the crossbar by Suzuki.
Villa restored their lead exactly on the hour mark. Ibrahim Mbaye was played behind the defense to deliver a cross that Jackson finished with a low shot that should have been stopped by Donnarumma. Despite a late push from the visitors, the scoreline held, securing a sixth win in seven games across all competitions for the hosts.
This victory highlights the significant rebuilding work Emery has undertaken since arriving four years ago. He has transformed Villa from a dormant force into a Champions League contender, even after losing much of the core squad that won the Europa League last season. Six starting players from that final departed in the transfer window, but the summer additions of Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi are already delivering results after a slow start.
For City, the loss occurs amid ongoing uncertainty regarding their financial future. The 10-time English champions are appealing a guilty verdict on over 100 charges of breaking financial rules between 2009 and 2018, with potential sanctions including relegation. While the team seemed unaffected on the pitch, two sloppy defensive errors ultimately proved costly. The result also gives Arsenal a chance to level the points table if they defeat Everton later on Saturday.
