World number one Elena Rybakina secured her spot in the Ningbo Open final by defeating Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday. The win positions the Russian to attempt a back-to-back title defense in the eastern Chinese city. She will face unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez in Sunday's championship match.

The result comes after a turbulent week for the Australian Open and US Open champion. Rybakina suffered a heavy loss in Beijing and subsequently withdrew from the Wuhan Open due to a foot injury. Her performance against the 13th-ranked Shnaider showed flashes of form but required resilience to close out the match.

Rybakina struggled to convert early momentum in the opening set. Despite hitting powerful winners from deep in the court, she faced a sudden dip in quality. She ultimately sealed the first set on her 11th set point after a lengthy struggle on her serve.

The second set mirrored the first in structure. The 27-year-old three-time Grand Slam winner continued to face challenges with first-serve accuracy. She broke serve to lead 4-3 but was then broken to love in the 10th game. Rybakina responded with aggressive hitting to regain the lead in the next game before serving out the match.

Shnaider's left-handed style presented specific tactical difficulties for the champion. Rybakina noted that switching patterns during rallies was an issue against the Russian. This presents a similar challenge for Sunday, as her final opponent Fernandez also plays left-handed.

Fernandez earned her place in the final by defeating Czech player Marie Bouzkova by the same 6-3, 7-5 scoreline. The match took place earlier in the day at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre. The unseeded Canadian will look to upset the world number one in the title decider.

Rybakina described the semifinal as a long and important contest. She acknowledged the difficulty of closing out key points despite playing well initially. Her comments suggest a focus on maintaining composure in high-pressure situations.

The Ningbo Open serves as a critical tune-up for the WTA Finals. Rybakina plans to compete in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo the following week. She will begin her defense of the WTA Finals title at Indian Wells on November 8.

The champion expressed a measured outlook on the prospect of winning the tournament for a second consecutive year. She stated that she would fight and give her all in the final, emphasizing the difficulty of the task ahead.
