Two days of silence will fall over a section of the Kherson front this week. The general staffs of Ukraine and Russia announced on Friday evening that a ceasefire takes effect in a designated area from the night of 27 October. This pause is designed to allow a humanitarian operation to proceed in the occupied town of Oleshky.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video address that the arrangement should take effect soon. He described the conditions in the town as dire, noting that Russian forces have mined the roads in the temporarily occupied region. The Ukrainian leader said Kyiv wants to restore access to the area, deliver supplies, and allow residents to leave the combat zone.

The White House stated that First Lady Melania Trump secured the truce. The administration described the current situation in Oleshky as a humanitarian disaster. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia agreed to the ceasefire to ensure the humanitarian mission could move forward.

Zelenskyy noted that negotiations have been ongoing for some time at various levels. He stated that Ukraine will do its part and that he counts on American mediation to work. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, specified that the humanitarian operation in Oleshky will take place on 29 October.

The town lies in Kherson Oblast under Russian control. The planned operation aims to bring food and medicine to the population. The ceasefire provides the necessary window for these supplies to cross the front lines safely.
