King Abdullah II of Jordan has directed the country's security apparatus to pursue a decisive and forceful response following a fatal shooting incident at a place of worship in the Karak governorate. The royal court announced that the monarch has ordered officials to hunt down every individual responsible for the violence. This directive marks a significant escalation in the state's handling of the crisis, signaling a strong commitment to restoring order after the incident shook the nation's capital and surrounding regions.

The toll of the attack is severe. Eight people lost their lives in the shooting, while forty others sustained injuries requiring medical attention. The victims were gathered for a funeral service when the gunfire erupted. The high casualty count has prompted a nationwide security review, with authorities increasing the presence of guards at key locations including shopping centers, diplomatic missions, and other public gathering spots across the kingdom.

The incident occurred on Friday at a Greek Orthodox church located in Karak, which sits approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Amman. Witnesses reported that gunmen opened fire for several minutes in broad daylight while the funeral rites were in progress. Jordanian officials have classified the event as an act of extremist terrorism. Despite the passage of time, no specific group has formally claimed responsibility for the violence, and the search for the perpetrators remains ongoing.

King Abdullah traveled to the scene of the attack within hours of the shooting to oversee the response efforts. He publicly vowed that the individuals behind the assault would be dealt with an iron fist. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan also addressed the nation, describing the event on the social media platform X as the result of a terrorist ideology and blind extremism. He emphasized that the society would not be allowed to follow this path, reinforcing the government's stance against such acts of violence.

Survivors have provided detailed accounts of the chaos that unfolded inside the building. Nasser al-Burqan, a lawyer who was present during the service, described the terrifying moments to Reuters. He recalled that one of the attackers stood roughly two meters away, aimed a handgun directly at him, and fired. Following the gunfire, his son, who was also attending the service, contacted him to report that he had been shot in the leg and was receiving treatment at a hospital.

Al-Burqan noted that after the initial barrage of shots ceased, he looked out a window behind him and spotted two assailants. One was wearing a mask, while the other was unmasked and carrying a handgun. The visual confirmation of the attackers has aided the police in their investigation. Video footage released on Saturday showed law enforcement officers patrolling the exterior of the church, maintaining a heavy security perimeter around the site.

The emotional impact of the tragedy was felt deeply in the local community. At a hospital treating the injured, Tarek Ammarin, whose relative was among the wounded, described the event as a massacre in every sense of the word. Bahjat al-Rushda, the mayor of Shihan village in Karak, condemned the act as wicked. He expressed hope that the country would remain safe, a sentiment shared by many as the nation entered a period of three days of national mourning.

While such attacks are relatively rare in Jordan, the US-allied kingdom has reported foiling multiple plots in recent years by groups driven by strict interpretations of Islam. The Karak region is notable for its minority Christian population. The country also hosts several biblical sites that attract Christian pilgrims from around the globe, making the security of these communities a priority for the government as it continues its search for the suspects.
