The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the death of a 36-year-old British woman in Bimini following a snorkeling accident on Tuesday.
Officers are investigating the sudden death of the resident of Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, who was with her husband and two sons near the southern point of the island. A strong ocean current pulled the two boys from the water, prompting the mother to enter the sea to reach them. She was subsequently swept away by the same force, while the boys were successfully rescued.
Police were notified shortly after 10:00 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. By the time officers arrived, she had already been transported to a local clinic. A doctor pronounced her dead on arrival after efforts to revive her failed. The initial report stated that she was pulled from the water and taken to the ferry dock, where bystanders administered CPR.
The police force indicated that foul play is not currently suspected in the case. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise medical cause of death. The incident highlights the specific dangers of strong currents in the Bimini area for visitors engaging in water sports.
A spokesperson for the British Foreign Office stated that officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family. The department noted that its thoughts are with the bereaved relatives of the woman.
