Residents of Tel Aviv saw a shift in security protocols at a political rally on Saturday night when a 23-year-old man from Givatayim was arrested. The incident occurred while former prime minister Naftali Bennett addressed a crowd demanding the creation of an independent commission of inquiry into the failures that preceded the October 7 massacre. The arrest follows a physical confrontation between the suspect and one of Bennett’s security guards.
The man, who police believe was under the influence of alcohol, attempted to breach the security perimeter surrounding Bennett. Sources indicate he shouted “Only Bibi,” a slogan supporting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while moving toward the stage. Despite instructions from the guards to hold back, the suspect continued to push forward. He was initially pushed back by a guard, but he refused to retreat.
The interaction escalated when the man shoved the guard in return. The security team quickly subdued the suspect and held him at the scene while waiting for law enforcement to arrive. Officers from the police unit arrived at the park, apprehended the man, and transported him to a nearby station for questioning.
This incident follows a timeline of increasing political activity in the weeks leading up to the 2026 Knesset elections. Bennett, who served as prime minister from June 2021 to June 2022, is currently chairman of the B’Yachad party. His rallies have focused on holding the current government accountable for the events of October 7. The use of the slogan “Only Bibi” suggests a direct attempt to disrupt Bennett’s message and align the crowd with his political rival.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact sequence of events and the condition of the suspect. An initial check revealed that the man has no prior criminal record. The police are examining witness statements and security footage from the rally to finalize their report. The incident marks the first physical altercation involving Bennett’s security detail during this campaign cycle.
The timing of the arrest coincides with the early stages of the national voting process. Soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces began casting their ballots at military polling stations earlier this week. Civilian voting is scheduled to follow in the coming weeks. The election is expected to determine the composition of the Knesset and potentially the direction of the government’s response to the post-October 7 inquiries.
