President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed optimism that the outcome of the recent United States midterm elections will lead to a more stable balance of power in Washington. He believes this shift may result in increased material and political support for Ukraine as it continues its war against Russia. The comments were made during an interview with the German broadcaster ZDF.
Zelenskyy explained that the election results signal a potential change in priorities for US policymakers. He noted that during the campaign, the Democratic Party clearly stated that they would focus on the war in Europe alongside domestic issues. This explicit commitment to the conflict against Russia was a key factor in his assessment of the political landscape.
The Ukrainian leader acknowledged that the country currently enjoys bipartisan support in the US Congress. He expressed gratitude to both the Democratic and Republican parties for their ongoing assistance. However, he highlighted that Democrats were particularly vocal about the importance of providing continued aid to Ukraine during the election period.
Zelenskyy argued that the transatlantic alliance has suffered some erosion over the past two years. He emphasized that this partnership is critical for stopping Russian President Vladimir Putin. Without a strong united front, he stated, halting the war becomes significantly more difficult. He hopes the new political dynamics will help restore and strengthen these ties.
According to Zelenskyy, a positive development would be if the new Congress begins to discuss robust financial packages and weapon deliveries for Ukraine. He compared this potential support to the level of assistance Europe is currently providing. Such concrete steps would be viewed as a significant boost for the Ukrainian defense effort.
The President suggested that increased US involvement would have a direct impact on Moscow. He believes that seeing stronger Western backing would make Vladimir Putin reconsider the logic of continuing the war. This shift in perception could be a decisive factor in the broader strategic calculus of the conflict.
Zelenskyy stated that logically, this renewed momentum would bring Ukraine closer to the possibility of negotiations. He indicated that a more supportive political environment in the US is a prerequisite for moving toward a potential peace process. The stability of the alliance is therefore seen as a gateway to diplomatic solutions.
The context for these remarks is the recent midterm elections in the United States, where the Republican Party lost its majority in both chambers of Congress under President Donald Trump. This change in legislative control has led many international leaders to reassess their expectations for US foreign policy and aid commitments.
As the new Congress prepares to take office, attention will turn to how they prioritize foreign policy budgets and military aid. For Ukraine, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether the hoped-for increase in support materializes into tangible actions on the ground.
