Thomas Markle Jr, the half brother of Meghan Markle, has been identified as a person of interest in an ongoing Philippine investigation into child sexual abuse image allegations. The case centers on the Duchess of Sussex's father, Thomas Markle Sr, who is currently facing claims regarding the possession of such images.
Jonvic Remulla, the Philippine secretary for interior and local government, addressed reporters in Manila on Thursday. He stated that authorities have found indications that the son may also have been involved in the crime. However, Remulla clarified that the 60-year-old Markle Jr is not yet being treated as a formal suspect in the matter.
The investigation has uncovered a significant volume of digital evidence. According to Remulla, officials recovered more than 7,500 photographs and one video file. The media files feature underage children of Asian, Latin, and European descent. Some of the children in the images appear to be as young as ten or eleven years old.
Remulla described the collection of images as the most deplorable display of impunity toward sexual exploitation that he has ever witnessed. He noted that Thomas Markle Jr initially alerted local police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to the images after discovering them in his father's belongings.
The 82-year-old father, who has an estranged relationship with Meghan, returned to the United States in May. Reports indicate that he subsequently moved into a rehabilitation center in Florida. Throughout the process, he has maintained that he did not possess the alleged child abuse images.
Despite the new development, Thomas Markle Jr remains in Cebu City in the Philippines. Remulla confirmed his current location during the news conference. Sky News has reached out to Markle Jr for comment regarding his status as a person of interest.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have declined to offer a public statement on the matter. Earlier this year, Meghan expressed that she was deeply distressed by the allegations concerning her father. She revealed that she had been shown a letter originally sent to the Metropolitan Police seven years prior.
Meghan described the letter as containing troubling and disturbing allegations about her father. She stated that she received assurances at the time that the claims were being actively investigated. The recent update from Philippine authorities adds a new layer of complexity to the high-profile case.
