One person died and at least five others were wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Paris suburb of Trappes on Friday. The attack disrupted weekend plans for residents and triggered a large-scale security deployment across the region. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed to maintain order.
The shooter fired from a gray Renault Clio for nearly 15 minutes, targeting three locations including a playground. The assault ended when five officers from the anti-crime brigade stopped the vehicle. The suspect was arrested in the nearby town of Coignieres. Nuñez described the weapon as military-grade or at least automatic.
President Emmanuel Macron labeled the incident a racist terror attack after meeting with officials and residents. He noted that the suspect’s statements indicated premeditation. Macron said the victims were targeted because of their skin color or perceived religion. He added that there is no place for such violence in France.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh told broadcaster BFMTV that the gunman drove through Trappes and neighboring La Verriere while firing at random. He characterized the event as one of the first attempted mass killings motivated by Islamophobia. Rabeh reported that five people were wounded, with three in critical condition. The mayor of La Verriere, Nicolas Dainville, confirmed that a 12-year-old girl was shot eight times and is in stable condition.
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation for murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. Prosecutors are examining whether the victims were targeted based on their real or supposed race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion. Three associates of the suspect were placed in police custody on Friday evening. The suspect has four prior convictions, which have been legally expunged.
The shooting occurred against a backdrop of national tension. France has recently seen mass protests over the cost of living and overnight curfews. Students and labor union members are expected to demonstrate on Saturday. Nuñez promised an uncompromising response to any violence, looting, or vandalism during the demonstrations.
Major cultural institutions have adjusted their schedules due to the security situation. The Louvre and other major Paris museums will be closed. Art Basel Paris has canceled its weekend program. These closures affect tourism revenue and local business operations in the capital.
