Israel is preparing for a significant period of inclement weather this weekend, with the Israel Meteorological Service predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flash floods in multiple regions. As temperatures drop, the unsettled conditions are expected to bring challenges to residents across the country, particularly in urban centers where drainage systems may struggle to cope with the volume of water.
The weather pattern is set to begin on Thursday, with local rain affecting northern and central Israel. Conditions are forecast to intensify overnight along the coastal areas. By Friday, the rain is expected to spread more broadly across the north and central parts of the country, while isolated showers and thunderstorms may reach the northern Negev region. The unsettled weather is likely to persist through Saturday before gradually weakening on Sunday.
Forecasters indicate that the coastal plain will face the most severe conditions. Certain areas along the coast may receive several dozen millimeters of rain in a short span, with total accumulation potentially reaching 100 millimeters or more in specific locations. Consequently, authorities have identified parts of central and coastal Israel as having a heightened risk of flooding, urging residents to remain vigilant.
Public safety officials have issued specific guidance to help citizens navigate the storm. The public has been advised to avoid crossing flooded roads or waterways to prevent vehicles from being swept away. Additionally, residents are urged to stay away from underground parking garages and elevators during periods of heavy rain, as these areas are particularly susceptible to water accumulation and potential power outages.
The storm will also coincide with significant transportation disruptions in central Israel. Large sections of the Ayalon Highway in Tel Aviv are scheduled to close for electrical maintenance work. These closures are planned for Thursday night through Friday afternoon and are expected to resume late Saturday, likely complicating travel during the peak rainfall periods.
Rail services in the Tel Aviv and Herzliya areas will also see major reductions. Most stations in Tel Aviv are set to close, which will limit public transit options for commuters and travelers. The combination of road closures and reduced rail service is expected to create a challenging weekend for those needing to travel across the metropolitan area.
This weekend's weather event follows a similar pattern seen in November 2025. During that period, heavy rains caused widespread flooding across Israel, leading to road closures in both the north and south. The previous incident resulted in the rescue of 12 people from vehicles, with eight of those rescues occurring in Ashkelon, where at least 70 millimeters of rain fell.
As the new weather system approaches, meteorologists continue to monitor the situation closely. While the rain is expected to weaken by Sunday, the initial burst of intensity on Friday and Saturday remains the primary concern for emergency services and local municipalities.
