A 56-year-old man from Houston died by suicide on Tuesday after a prolonged armed standoff at a historic church in Fayette County, Texas. The Fayette County Sheriff's Office confirmed that negotiations with the man ended when he took his own life.

The incident was linked to the murder of a 59-year-old man from California. That victim was found unresponsive in a driveway on the 2200 block of South State Highway 237 on October 22. Authorities arrived at the scene at 7:44 a.m. and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled the death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.

Detectives identified the 56-year-old Houston resident as a person of interest during that initial investigation. On Tuesday, investigators learned he was in Houston and intended to travel to a historic church near Round Top via a rideshare service. The driver contacted police after dropping the man off, reporting that he had been held at gunpoint and forced to drive from Houston to the destination. The driver was not injured and was released by authorities.

Deputies located the armed man inside the church, initiating the standoff. Officers negotiated with him for several hours before the situation concluded. The sheriff's office stated that the man's identity has not yet been released while next of kin are notified.

The investigation into the homicide remains ongoing. The church is located near Round Top, a community known for its history along State Highway 237. No other details regarding the cause of the standoff or specific evidence have been made public as of Tuesday.
