Ten minutes was all it took for crews to bring a barn fire in Peotone, Illinois, under control on Friday evening. The incident occurred in the 29000 block of South Joliet Road, where no people were hurt.
The Manhattan Fire Protection District received the initial call at approximately 7 p.m. Units arrived on the scene four minutes after the dispatch. Firefighters found smoke coming from the structure and confirmed a working fire. This finding triggered an upgrade to a full still alarm, which brought more personnel and equipment to the location. A general alarm was also issued, requiring other district personnel to report to their stations to maintain coverage.
Officials stated that all occupants evacuated the building safely. No injuries were reported among civilians or the responding firefighters. The fire appears to have been accidental in nature.
Four other districts provided mutual aid assistance at the scene: Beecher, Monee, Frankfort, and Manteno Fire Protection Districts. These departments helped manage the emergency and support the primary crews.
To keep emergency response capabilities intact in Manhattan, additional departments covered the vacant stations. The Elwood Fire Protection District and Mokena Fire Protection District staffed Station 81. The University Park Fire Department and Manteno Fire Protection District covered Station 83.
