Jacob Luna, 31, is in critical condition at a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds after he and four undercover San Antonio police officers exchanged fire on Sunday evening. Police said Luna is expected to survive. No officers were hurt.

The confrontation began around 6:15 p.m. near the 1700 block of Horal Drive, where plainclothes officers were conducting surveillance. They were following a man wanted on an arrest warrant tied to a narcotics offense, the police department said. Officers reported that Luna noticed them and displayed a firearm from his vehicle window before opening fire. Police returned fire.

Luna drove off, striking several vehicles before his car hit a tree, according to the department. He then fled on foot but collapsed a short distance from the crash site, where officers took him into custody and found he had been shot multiple times. Police recovered a firearm at the scene.

Luna faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a charge of controlled substance possession. The four officers involved, who each have 8 to 10 years of service, have been placed on administrative duties pending review. The department has not said how many rounds were fired or whether Luna's weapon was recovered from his vehicle.
